Diane Chaplin, cello

Solo cellist Diane Chaplin presents a program that highlights the haunting beauty and majestic voice of the cello with music inspired by an earlier time. Composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Lamentations: Black/Folk Song Suite explores aspects of traditional African American music, and as the composer explained, “The common denominator of these tunes is the reflection and statement of a people’s crying out.” Reflections of the 15th and 16th centuries can be seen in Caroline Shaw’s in manus tuas, John Tavener’s Threnos, Michal Stahel’s Song of Solitude and Benjamin Godard’s romantic-era Solo Sonata.
